How To Start A History Blog: The hardest part of starting a history blog is choosing to do the work. What's left is easy. Many of us want to write down our family stories, but with our busy lives, we might not have time to write a 300-page book. You don't need significant time to write about your family history and share it with others.

A great alternative is to write a blog about family history. Blogs are simple websites with articles listed from most recent to oldest. This is a great way to tell a story that takes place at different times. Like a podcast, blogs also let people "subscribe" for free.

In other words, your readers don't have to remember to check your blog and see what's new. Instead, they can get emails when you post new articles, or they can read your new articles in a blog reader along with other favorite blogs and podcasts. Very convenient indeed!

Some history blogs are about war, like World War II or the Vietnam War. If you choose war as your niche, you can write about many different parts of that war. Your niche can also be about a certain time. For instance, the Victorian Age or the Roaring Twenties.

You can study weird parts of history as I do, or you can study mysteries, murders, the death penalty, the English monarchy, and even coal mining. Choose a niche that interests you, and others will be interested.

Research and make lists

Researching your primary niche will take a lot of time, so you should keep a list of all the ideas, possible ideas, and threads you want to follow up on.

Make a list of the possible titles.

You will also wish to make a title list while researching and taking general notes. I keep a file with hundreds of possible titles for articles that I keep up to date. When I can't think of anything to research, I pick a title from my list and start working on it. This keeps me from thinking about what I'll write about today.

Writing, writing, writing

Set aside time to write the posts for your blog. If you work full-time at another job, plan to write one blog post a week. If you have time to write more, do so, but don't try to write a week's worth of content in one day. Good, long-form content with at least 1,000 words is more important than many short articles with less than 500 words.

Find the social media platform that works best for you.

Some people post their content on all social media sites, but I've found that I get the most click-throughs on Pinterest. When you start your blog and post links to your content, you need to find out which platform works best for your content.

Once you've found either one or two social media platforms that work best for you, you should focus on those and forget about the others. You are just one person, so you should concentrate on the content, not the number of likes.

Do not give up

Getting people to read a blog written by one person takes time and patience. Even if your latest article only gets 10 views, that's a big deal. Know that if your content is well-written and useful, it will get more clicks.

Don't expect to get rich or make enough money to live on in your first year of blogging about history. More likely than not, it won't happen. Instead, concentrate on your content and slowly branch out into podcasting or YouTube to make a small amount of money.
